Socius - Memorable Social Eating, Burnham Market

Socius - Memorable Social Eating, Burnham Market

Last Saturday was a very special day for my sister Emma, we spent the day shopping for her wedding dress and found ‘the one’. To celebrate such a momentous occasion we decided that a few glasses of wine and dinner were in order.

Our restaurant of choice was the recently opened Socius which is located in Burnham Market a little Norfolk gem. Socius is Latin for sharing and this absolutely is the best way to describe the style of dining. When we were seated we were advised to order 3 dishes each as their food is served on small plates designed for sharing, as they describe it, it’s “Modern British Tapas”.

There is a very ‘scandi’ feel to the décor and layout. The design is very clever as the restaurant is open plan, spacious and benefits from huge floor to ceiling windows, yet the room felt cosy and intimate. The smells coming from the open plan kitchen had my mouth watering before I had even seen the menu.

The menu – where to start! There is such a huge array of choice.  We started with the Sticky King Prawns. I am not a massive lover of prawns, but these definitely converted me. They were delicious, so delicious in fact that we ended up ordering another portion! Alongside these we had the focaccia, this came with a slightly spicy hummus. These two dishes were perfect together and gave us a taste of what was to come.

Tuna tartare with spicy aioli and pickles, cured Salmon, beetroot and horseradish, sticky Lamb, Burrata with heritage tomatoes and rocket pesto. Then, what I felt was the absolute jewel in the crown arrived at the table, perfectly roasted Duck breast served with crispy Duck bon bon, socius hoisin, cucumber, leeks and nam jon pancakes.

The duck bon bon’s were out of this world. I could have eaten a bowl full of these! Unlike the company I was with, I am not the most adventurous of eaters, I tend to stick to what I know.  However, the girls were not going to allow this and I was coaxed into trying everything that arrived at our table, I am so glad I did.  My senses were in overdrive throughout the entire experience, everything was presented so beautifully, and every single mouthful I had complimented the next.

I really enjoyed the social aspect that sharing food created, and the fact that it encouraged me to try new things made it all the more special. I really cannot recommend this restaurant enough. They also have an amazing kids menu so we will definitely be back to enjoy it as a family too!

Top tip, book ahead, because once word gets out about this place, tables will be in seriously high demand! Visit sociusnorfolk.co.uk for more info and bookings.
