A Joyful Christmas

The magic of Christmas for me is Christmas Eve, it’s the most wonderful day of the year. As a child it was the day when everything ‘Christmas’ happened. The house would be sparkling clean, a week of top to toe preparations would see everything polished and shining. On Christmas Eve our Mama would bring out a bottle of sherry and Cinzano with bowls of satsumas, walnuts and brazil nuts and our favourite Eat Me dates with the long spear, it was so impossibly exciting.

As an adult I’ve carried these traditions with me, I love to have everything sparkling clean and ready by the 23rd so that Christmas Eve can be spent doing all our favourite things.

Staying home at Christmas is very important to me, I’d love to see stores closed on the three days of the holiday. I’ve never opened the store on Christmas Eve, or Boxing Day. I think we all have so little family time its good to stop and spend time together, so apart from a walk I don’t leave the house.

Winter Home Styling Tips by Jo at Joyful Living:

If you like to keep flowers to a minimum choose a simple bunch of eucalyptus its cheap, lasts for ages and smells incredible.

Christmas is a great time to use serve ware or glassware considered too fancy for everyday use and never gets used.  I always love to use cut crystal glasses and always dig out tureens and silverware that we really only use once a year.  They give a glamour and formality that make the table seem so celebratory.

I love big bowls of satsumas and nuts, they all get eaten eventually and they scream Christmas.

Candles, we use them in the mornings right through to bedtime all over the house. Even if you have young children there are amazing battery operated pillar candles that look as good as the real thing, they are remote controlled so simple to use.  I also use a natural fragranced candle in the hallway which wafts through the house, in past years I’ve always used Neom Organics ‘Perfect Peace’, this year we have chosen St. Evals ‘Winter Thyme’.
